Why Study Scripture?

Why Study Scripture?

We study scripture for one thing alone, that we become mature in Christ.

Using the words of Apostle Paul:
"That we may present every man mature in Christ" (Colossians Chapter 1 Verse 28).
Here, the Apostle Paul was so concerned about this task that he adds: "For this I toil, striving with all the energy which He mightily inspires within me" (Colossians Chapter 1 Verse 29).

When we therefore study scripture, we need to toil, striving with earnest energy.  In fact the genuine study of scripture, is a joy not a toil, a joy that we might be able to share scripture with others, for the primary purpose of spreading the Gospel.  So we need to be serious, highly motivated, and fully engaged in the task, giving all that we can give it.

For the Psalmist says:
"If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11 Verse 3).

So, if we need to give it our all, were does the energy and drive for it come from?

The energy comes from: "the energy which He mightily inspires within me." And who is he? It is The Christ. It is He that provides the power.  (Colossians Chapter 1 Verses 27-32).

Now, according to the Apostle Peter, in scripture all Christians are "an Holy Priesthood themselves to offer up spiritual sacrifices", (1 Peter Chapter 2 Verse 5). This being the case, we all now individually have the position of "Priest Hood" and an "Holy Priest Hood" at that, but have we assumed that position?

We are no longer to be pew sitters, we are called each of us to be accountable only to the Lord Himself, and not to those who would dominate us within a church body.  Look at the following scripture:

"God desires to make known the riches of the glory of this revealed secret, among the nations, which is: Christ in you, the confident expectation of that glory. Him we proclaim, encouraging and warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom in order that we may present every man mature in Christ (fulfilling all that Christ designs to accomplish in his life). For this I also (as well as you) work hard, agonizing, according to the operation of His energizing in me with Power." (Colossians Chapter 1 Verses 27-32).

Thus we each need to study scripture for one thing alone, that "we each" become mature in The Christ, so that we know the Word "that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about by every wind of doctrine" (Ephesians Chapter 4 Verse 14), and "always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you" (1 Peter Chapter 3 Verse 15).

Without the conscientious study of what God has shown us all, Truth escapes us and the only thing that remains is falsehood.

And Again:

Jesus said to the religious rulers of His: "You search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life"  (John Chapter 5 Verse 39).  You see many people search the scriptures, some for truth, others for vanity, some for power, we each need to be able to assess what is said of scripture to check its authenticy.

Within and without the Church of the Living Christ, we will find some people that we cannot combat due to perhaps their selfish "verbosity" (perhaps unintentional), that being the case, we need to be able to identify where they are coming from scripturally, but not to diverse arguments, but to go on from there, "for Him that loved us" (John Chapter 3 Verse 16).

We are told,  "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort (you) that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. (Jude Verse 3).

This verse teaches that a body of truth from God has been delivered to man and that this faith has been wholly delivered. This seems to indicate that no further revelation from God is necessary. God has told us in Scripture everything that we need to know about who He is, who we are, and what will happen to the earth in the future.

Given this, we need to step out in confidence, and with maturity, knowing that the nature of God does not change "For I am the Lord, I do not change" - (Malachi Chapter 3 Verse 6).

"Vanity of vanity, all is vanity"

It is written "Vanity of vanity, all is vanity" (Ecclesiastes Chapter 1 Verse 2).  Here the writer "Solomon", is demonstrating humanity at its best (or its worst).  If we are immersed in Scripture, then we can cope well with "Vanity of vanity, all is vanity" both from within the Church of the Living God and outside it.
